Ghana weather and climate

The climate of Ghana is tropical but quite mild, considering its distance from the equator. The conditions causing the difference in climatic conditions over different parts of the country are the sun's position and the subsequent location of the inter-tropical convergence zone, the border between the dry northeasterly winds and the wet southwesterly winds.

The south has two rainy seasons, April through June, and later September through November. Squalls are common in the north between March and April, with occasional showers until August and September. The rainfall peaks after that.

Relative humidity ranges from 50% to 80%, while the average temperatures range from 21 °C to 32 °C (70-90 °F). Rainfall varies from 83 to 220 cm (33-87 in) per year.

The harmattan is a dry desert wind that blows from the northeast from December to March. It lowers the humidity, bringing hot days and cool nights to north Ghana. This wind blows over the south in January. March temperatures are the highest in most areas while August temperatures are the lowest. Night and day temperatures do not vary a lot, although the variation is a little higher in the north, more so when the harmattan blows in January. The lowest temperature in Ghana to ever be recorded is 10 °C (50 °F).
