Ashanti culture centers on ancestral worship, and so once a month (every 42 days) it is customary to come in contact with the ancestors to give them thanks for their protection. The festival begins on Friday, and many parts are not open to the public.

The next day, Saturday rituals are performed, but not in public. The climax, which is Sunday, is open to the public and is called Akwasidae. The celebration on these days involves purification of the black ancestral stools in the stool's room at the King's Palace, which only a few people are allowed to observe. These stools are hand carved chairs for past kings. At the King's death, his stool is blackened and kept in the stool's room.

A main component of the ritual is the golden stool. The golden stool is the symbol of the Ashanti unity, and it is believed that the golden stool contains the spirit of all Ashanti both dead and living. This is an occasion to pay homage to the Ashantihene.
